The African American Heritage Corridor project proposes ethnic-heritage based or “culturally-centered” community development as an effective way to build intercultural literacy for adults and youth, thereby strengthening and sustaining positive aspects of the communities with which we engage. We approach this idea from a tourism-generating perspective to leverage existing strengths and assets; to offer a higher return on investment for all stakeholders; and to reach the most people.
The Corridor links downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota attractions physically and conceptually with a proposed culturally-centered commercial corridor along a part of the city’s Selby Avenue via the African American Heritage Trail. This physical and thematic connection between downtown and the Summit-University neighborhood encourages visitors to flow from one part of the city to the other.
The goal is to create a city asset that:
Builds cultural literacy through education and experience.
Establishes a renewable, sustainable and authentic cultural asset.
Increases the capacity of culturally diverse populations to benefit economically.
Strengthens Saint Paul’s national reputation as an exciting destination and livable city.
About CultureBrokers Foundation, Inc.
CultureBrokers Foundation, Inc. (CBF) is a tax-exempt charitable organization whose mission is to build intercultural literacy. Knowledge of the history, contributions and perspectives of different cultural groups (including one’s own group) is increasingly valued as our economy “goes more global”. We believe that the best way to gain this knowledge is through authentic, respectful interaction and community-led learning experiences. We also believe that these efforts are more likely to be embraced and sustained if they are tied directly to economic outcomes.
